London is the capital city of the United Kingdom, located in southeastern England along the banks of the River Thames. The city lies at a low elevation, with much of Greater London situated close to sea level and gradually rising toward the surrounding hills. London shares boundaries with several counties including Surrey to the south, Kent to the southeast, Essex to the northeast, and Hertfordshire to the north. Greater London spans an area of approximately 1,572 sq km (607 sq mi), comprising the City of London and 32 boroughs.

London lies within a temperate maritime climate zone. Its landscape is shaped by historic urban development, parks, gardens, and meandering waterways rather than natural deserts or plains. The River Thames flows through the heart of the city, widening as it approaches the North Sea. The city is well-known for its extensive green spaces such as Hyde Park, Regent’s Park, and Richmond Park, along with architectural landmarks that represent centuries of history. While central London is densely built, the outer boroughs feature suburban settings with woodlands, grasslands, and gently rolling terrain. The region’s soil composition varies from clay and gravel in many areas to richer loams within parklands and green belts.
